Ingredients
This recipe only requires 4 ingredients. If you're making the recipe keto, as shown in this post, you'll want to purchase ingredients with low to zero carbs and no added sugar.
- Unsweetened ketchup - choosing a ketchup without sugar is crucial to keeping this recipe keto. There are many options available at most grocery stores these days, if your local store doesn't have it, you can check a health food store or online.
- Dijon mustard - this gives the perfect bite to the sauce. Make sure to choose a creamy dijon and not whole grain to keep the consistency of the sauce smooth.
- Mayonnaise - again, make sure to read the label to ensure there are no extra ingredients that don't fit in with your diet.
- Pickles - finely chopping up your own pickles is way better than using sweet pickle relish with added sugar! Make sure to choose dill pickles and not bread and butter or sweet pickles.
Instructions
- Combine all of the ingredients in a medium bowl.
That's it, one step and you're done!
Once you've made the sauce, taste it and if you feel like it needs added salt, mix in ¼ teaspoon salt. I found that the pickles were salty enough, I didn't add any salt to the recipe.
Store the sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
Tips and tricks
- If you don't want to use mayo, you can substitute in Greek yogurt. The texture and flavor will just be slightly different.
- To spice it up, feel free to add in 1 teaspoon of hot sauce. Most hot sauces contain zero carbs, making it a keto-friendly addition to the sauce!
- Make it extra tangy by mixing in a little extra pickle juice. Just make sure not to add too much, or the sauce will be too thin.
- Dill pickle relish can be used in place of the pickles. Double check the ingredients for added sugars! Sweet relish will change the flavor and contains sugar.
- Allow the secret sauce to rest for the flavors to meld. You can eat it right away, but letting it chill in the fridge for at least an hour makes it even better!
- Experiment with added flavors and stir in some paprika, dill, onion powder, garlic powder, pepper, horseradish, diced cucumber, or red onion.
